Windy Petersen. Windy Petersen is an educator of young people with learning and emotional needs for approximately 25 years. She currently holds the position of Student Services Supervisor for the Goodwin College Magnet Schools in East Hartford, CT, USA. This role incorporates her skills as a special educator, educational leader, and supervisor of staff who work with students in primary through secondary grades. Educating young people has been her life’s passion and a belief system that she has adhered to because she firmly believes that education is the key that opens doors that may have remained closed.
Windy has had the honor of volunteering in Uganda for the past three years to support the educational needs of young people who have learning and emotional difficulties at the Watoto Children’s’ Villages in the greater Kampala region. Through her work with staff at Watoto, she not only supported students who have learning needs, but she also provided professional development to staff and trained staff in the philosophies of PeaceJam. PeaceJam is an international organization that teaches youth the value of peace through community service and team building while following the philosophies of 14 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.
PeaceJam has been an invaluable tool that she incorporated in her previous classroom work, supported a number of staff at the Watoto Bbira Village, and she is currently working to create a centralized PeaceJam focus in the state of Connecticut. PeaceJam was the avenue in which her path crossed with Mr. Faruku Kibaba the Founder and Executive Director of Great Lakes Peace Center. She has been a supporting pillar in the establishment of the PeaceJam Uganda Chapter.
