Salim

Salim was born and raised in Nyakasanga, a small suburb (in Kasese) that was characterized by thuggery,
drug addiction, an overwhelming number of street children and a lot of decadence. He however grew up
with the urge to transform his society.
During his early stages of education, he actively participated in school debates for he wanted to use it as
an avenue to put a spotlight on some of the pertinent issues faced in the community. He thus grew up
to become a vibrant systems-influencer, who gained trust from / among his peers, teachers and other
members of the community.
In a bid to exploit more avenues to use to influence social change, Salim joined the Interact Club of his
High School, thereby affiliating himself with the Rotary Fraternity. While he served as the Mission Green
President of his Interact Club, he initiated numerous projects / activities that would help transform the
society.
Also, through his affiliation with the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of Kasese, Salim met many amazing
people who greatly helped him raise to more heights as a social-change activist. He drew so much
inspiration and lessons from the young professionals and they consequently become a cornerstone in
his life. They provided guidance and support to him, and that honed his leadership ability.
Having attended two “Youth 4 Peace” Conferences organised by Great Lakes Peace Center (GLPC), he
developed interest in Peace Advocacy work. He became an active member of Community Peace Building
Interventions and thought, he would have a bigger impact if he had a more well-established avenue of
service. Thus he decided to start volunteering with GLPC, which not only was a good ground for him to
make his contribution, but also provided him with the support, guidance and mentorship he needed to
enhance his peace building efforts.
Furthermore, having joined Law School, Salim thought it wise to use his Legal knowledge to promote
Social Justice as a tool of transformation and peace building. He also joined and became a very active
member of Rotaract, which was definitely another platform of community service.
Salim has grown to become a passionate Peace Actor who has participated in numerous conferences,
workshops, projects and other interventions in regard to peace and conflict resolution. He has also
acquired training in negotiation, mediation as well as other peace building modules. He has facilitated
community meetings / dialogues as a Peace Ambassador and attended the International Conference on
Indigenous Minority Groups in Africa and spoken at other related fora.
He is also a Rotary Positive Peace Activator, under which capacity he designs projects / activities /
workshops that address the concept of Positive Peace: a program supported by Rotary International and
the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP). Besides that, Salim is a Mental Health Champion and also does
Life Coaching for youth. He believes that, we can create a better world when we empower youths to
take action in regard to the communities’ problems.
His hobbies are swimming, making public presentations, touring and adventuring, creative writing,
reading and acting. He implores everyone to do the best they can, to; Leave Their Marks for Peace.
